Business Web Site Promotions,
Focused Presentation Internet Marketing You've got this Dream of a Web Site in your Mind's Eye. You're Web savvy, or maybe you're not. But, either way, you've got this Vision of a Presence on the Web:
Y o u r O w n W e b S i t e
W o r l d W i d e
N o t i c e d
But How?
What To Do Next?
You've got to get in on the Marketing Revolution, and make the Jump to the 21st Century, right?
Most likely, you're an Entrepreneur, or in Management, am I right? You're used to handling tough, fluid situations, like this Web Site Deal, right? But, It's easy to make mistakes, and waste a lot of time, & effort, and (by the way) Money.
The most common mistakes are made when we just choose badly, either through innocent ignorance, or ( worse), through innocent conceit. "Innocent conceit" is when we innocently think we know-it-all, based upon past success. Being used to successfully tackling problems in business, we sometimes begin to assume ("ass U me") that we are likewise Great at everything. We also apparently sometimes assume we can become instant Web Site Experts, Artists, & Promoters.
Title:
Meta Tags are written in html code, and are what the Search Engines like to eat for breakfast.
Tastiest of all is the <TITLE>title</TITLE>.
This is Not the actual Title Of Your Web Site.
It is the html code for the special <TITLE>title</TITLE> which the Search Engines will read and index.
The Search Engines simply attach the most importance to this piece of data, found in the html code of your web site.
It is a big KeyWord, or Search Term?

Don't bother putting your name or company name in the <TITLE> unless you're famous already, and people will be searching for you by name.
Do not dilute the <TITLE> with a lot of extraneous comments and words. You will lessen it's force and it's influence upon the Search Engines.
By the same token, a good <TITLE> can be packed with relevant keywords and made to work strongly in your behalf.
For instance, if you are in Real Estate, a good,
hard-hitting <TITLE> would likely be, "Real Estate, Investment, Real Estate, Properties, Homes, Apartments, Rentals, Condominiums, Real Estate Listings!"
A really bad <TITLE> would be, "****BOB SNERDLY MEGA-REALTY CO., BEST LISTINGS ANYWHERE, **BEST CHOICES**, LICENSED PROFESSIONALS WILL HELP YOU FIND WHAT YOU WANT****!!!
First, it says Nothing the Search Engines are interested in.
Second, which word would anyone be searching on?
Third, by putting a word in all capitals, you guarantee its rejection for indexing in some Engines.
Fourth, by enclosing a word in *asterisks,* you render it totally to the Search Engines. The same would apply to the use of quotation marks.
The <TITLE> is what will pop up first when someone searches
keywords. It's what they will see first. It should contain words you think people will be searching on.
There are a zillion Nasty, Evil, Dirty, Dangerous Little Search Engine Tricks for the Uninitiated to be wary of!
Keywords:
These are the Words the Search Engines use to find you. They are the aroma of Search Engine breakfasts, and tell them what they are dining upon.
These Words must be precisely chosen, blended cunningly, and not over done. There must Not be too many of them, and they must act to concentrate the main flavor you are seeking to convey.
Keywords must be concentrated in a certain percentage, counted, they must be repeated, but matches may not touch, or be side-by-side, and More.
For instance, a keyword can be more powerful alone, because it is then more concentrated, more potent in the jaws of the Search Engines.
An example would be if one is selling Annuities. The main keyword(s) could be, simply "annuities."
This is better than a list that goes on & on, like, say, "annuities, financial, stocks, bonds, financial software, newsletters, seminars, DOW, Dow Jones, DOW Dogs, trading, stockbrokers, investments, stock brokers." etc.
It is Not how many keywords you can cram in, but how cunningly they are chosen, and well you concentrate their power. Words like "buy, fun, boy, girl, your, new," and many Others, just won't help, and can actually hinder your promotion.
Also, there are zillions of little tricks, like making the words plural, rather than singular.
Obviously, most plurals contain two words, but singulars contain only one. The Search Engines know this very well.
Keywords are for the technical expert to come up with, in most situations. It is really a matter of experience.
Descriptions:
Descriptions should talk about what is actually on the Site. Do Not talk about yourself or your company or how "Great" you and they are. Nobody cares.
Show what you Got.
What can you Do for "me?"
Why should I bother with Your Site?
What's on that there Site?
. . .and make it Good.
Descriptions must be Limited to 150 characters, including spaces!
Promotions:
Promotions is what I Do.
Promotions is a Category unique to itself.
Promotions is not just a simple matter of plugging in the software and launching to the Internet.
Notice how I worked the Keyword into my narrative?
After selecting the most effective <Meta-Tags>, and filling in the forms in the software, you can't just launch, and walk away.
Nope.
You must have already done everything else correctly, previous to this step!
Banners, Link Exchange, Awards:
"The use of Banners and Link Exchanges is a pet peeve.
The basic premise is, they are, well, Useless.
Why bring people to your Site, only to have them Link Out & leave you for Another!
Link Exchange Bannners
Link exchanges are not to be confused with paid banner campaigns which are a whole different kettle of fish.
Paid banners will get you very highly targeted traffic which will do a lot of good for your sales, unlike free link exchanges. At first glance it's free and everybody's doing it so it
must be a good idea. Well, I'm telling you that it won't build any extra traffic for you. In fact, it could even be bad for you. Example A: You've worked really hard to get a good listing on Yahoo! A user finds you there and clicks on your link. So there you have it, the fruits of your labor, a visitor to your site. And what's the first thing they see?
A banner advert inviting them to leave your page!! Example B: A user is browsing another site on the subject of computer software. They click on the link exchange banner on that site and end up at your page. Good. The trouble is, your page is on the subject of hotels. So, the user is unhappy because they're not interested in hotels, you're unhappy because although you have a visitor he's not interested in your subject, and what about the poor original guy who may have lost a software sale?
. . .Your links page is located somewhere on your site where the user ends up after they've read everything on your site, correct? If not, it should be! Link exchange services insist that you display the banner right on your index.html page, right at the
top more often than not.
Awards:
Whoever dreamed this up must have a degree in crowd psychology. It's crazy. Once upon a time you'd have to
request a link from another person's Web site. These
days, all you have to do is design a graphic and then
pompously allow webmasters to link you - not just a text
link, mind you, a big in-yer-face graphic!. Many award
givers won't even bother to give you a link from their site. Eh?!
I recently applied for several awards for research
purposes, to see if it would bring me any extra traffic. It
didn't, but what it did bring me was extra spam in my
mailbox. I used a unique email address to apply for the
awards, so I know the award sites sold my email
address to spammers. Very naughty.
There are possible advantages in applying for awards:
If you're a site designer it might impress potent customers, but reckon they're more likely to hire you on the strength of the previous work you're displaying. What do you think?
To generate traffic to your site which would depend on how popular the award giver's site is, and how prominently your link is displayed on their site. Note the fact that whether or not you display their graphic plays no part in this, unless they insist that you display it.
To make your page look pretty. Fair enough, but this is nothing to do with traffic or promotion. What about Pointcast and Magellan?
OK, I would be tempted to display these if I got them because everybody knows how difficult they are to get, and it really is kudos, but even then, I would be more interested in the fact that my listing would appear in the Pointcast directory which would definitely increase my traffic."

FRAMES
Is your site done in "Frames" ?
This is a black-and-white issue.
A site in Frames has only One URL, or Address.
Frames makes no difference in the Minor Directories, since you're only supposed to submit a single home (URL) page to them.
However, on the robot-driven engines, if your site is in Frames, then your site has only one URL and can get only one listing.
Whereas, if the site is not in frames it can get many listings, one for each page.
The more pages, the better.
Further, the single listing for a Framed site won't get any kind of ranking, because it's just a short block of code.
There is only one sensible solution for promoting a framed site:
redesign it without frames.
CGi
Is your site using CGi Technology ?
Sites that use CGi technology are all generated "on-the-fly," with a cgi script, by the Host computer.
In essence, the Pages don't exist, until they are "asked for" by a visitor clicking on a URL. At this point, they are created.
Therefore, it's impossible to get any listings on the robot-driven search engines, since these types of CGi pages are "invisible" to them.
CGi-driven Sites are mostly Not Promotable.
I could promote the home page of such a site, especially on the minor directories, but since all the "pages" of a CGi driven Site are essentially identical, they might be eternal conflict with each other.
In situations where CGi-driven Parent Sites host "Clients," or tenants, or "stores," the same problems might apply to the tenants' web Pages.
Even the Promotion of true home pages in such a Site may have very little impact on the robot-driven engines.
CGi technology should be avoided.
However, there are sometimes "workarounds" available.
Deep Search Engines
"This type of engine uses a robot or a spider (there's an arcane difference between the two that isn't very interesting) which constantly roams the World Wide Web searching for new or updated pages (what a wonderful job eh?)
When the robot visits a page it reads the whole thing,\ including any sub-pages on the same server connected to the page it's reading, then it visits all the external links on the pages it's read...and so on, you get the idea.
A robot can only follow links. It finds pages in two ways: by visiting pages it's been told about (ie. on its submission form) or by following links from other pages. So, if your page isn't linked from anywhere else and you haven't registered it, there's no way it'll ever be found — it'll be invisible.
You can actually ensure that most of the deep engines don't index your pages by using special "no follow" META tags if you want to.
The point is that all the while it's storing every word on every page it visits, then compressing the information down and storing it all in its database.
Now, you may be thinking "Wow! I'll always use a
deep search engine to find things in future." but in practice the deep ones are useful for finding specific or obscure information using long search strings, but if you're looking for something popular like games then you'll probably get a search results list running into the millions which isn't much use.
What this means to you:
Don't make the mistake of thinking that the robots will get to your site eventually. Register it. Normally, all you'll need to do is fill in your URL and nothing else.
Easy. To attract the attentions of deep search engines (to put your page high on results lists) you need to tailor your page itself which is discussed later.
This is the complete list of deep search engines that use robots to index pages:
Alta Vista
Infoseek
Excite
Webcrawler
Hotbot
Lycos
